Testing the Water

.Walking the flatland
in dusk of Mother
grade school evening

                             remembering
the color
of chalkboards

Pahn meets Kwahnyinn
warm
and vapory

              carmine breast
curly hair
and epicanthic eyes

                           Strolling
breathing wet air
they skirt
the chain link neighbors

                                         speak
                                         stare
                                         smile
crossing the play-field
the dewing lawn

They lie in woolens
on the maroon picnic table

          the affection before a gale

Pahn begins to press

         and rock against her

She looks away

                                    into the dull air
the flesh covered
the body sleeping

They walk and limber
and draw near the rich house
on a cliff

             above a lake
louvers of windows

            opening on the water

                           and there they watch
a far shore
become a squall
the lake
a sea
the wind
rain
and the deep         rising

                                       against the glass

They fear the waves
withdrawing
from her fragile
vitreous barrier

Passing back...and forth
through the walls
now watching
now hiding
they gaze and coo
waiting

                          for the storm
to pass
