A Bird and a Flower

…Pahn is working    a great crane    lifting
a leaden object      in the construction
(of what?)
unsuccessfully      because
he is not a crane operator     but
finally   the operator with crane experience comes    and
Pahn
gives the crane over…

…Pahn
with Aiks
               Eeunks
Daphnis

comes into a house
where they would eat          discussing
the addition          that is now overseen
by the operator/technician

As the four of them look          around the main
          room
noting the disorganization
of their thoughts
 in the air
        and
in the walls      behind their minds

the operator/technician comes in and tells them
that they     can use the small part
     of the expansion

Lakhehsis
comes out        of the recesses of the old     and asks
in which chamber they would like to eat

They all feel the warm air in the old room    and then
compare it to the temperature in the new
holding out their arms to sense it
passing through the cold foyer                  in between—

Lakhehsis gives her opinion

and they decide to eat     in the new

As Lakhehsis fades     into the old part of the air
Daphnis and Pahn     begin to explore      the screen
that comes up before them     and find
that the files at hand       have been ordered logically

Pahn searches for his sexual file      to hide it      from
the kids (even as he thinks to himself
that they     being teenagers      must have their own
sexual files
hidden around the room)       but when he finds his
erotic file      he sees that the technician
has locked its icon
into the screen     so that it only can be opened
by Pahn…

…Pahn is walking through a meadow       watching
a dog chase birds     in the sky
He tells the dog      that to catch birds
he has to find them in the shrubbery where they are low
to the ground     and points ahead     to a line
of bushes     where large birds     are flapping
and bumbling through the leaves and twigs

                                       He continues walking
through the meadow    around the shrubby thicket
and on the other side he hears the voices
of his comrades     behind him      saying
something      with surprise and delight      about
the small cuipas      on the cropped grass
but when Pahn looks
 they are tiny ducklings
like crocus in a lawn    a muted Zwanenburg bronze

Pahn puts down his hand     and
one duckling climbs on       and thittles
along his arm—Pahn hopes
that the fuzzy dear
will brush his neck            and ears

but it hops off
before it reaches his shoulder…

…Pahn walks into a small    planky room
where ornaments     are being sold
and finds
and admires
a glass etching of a
bird

Aiks comes in      and Pahn tells her
of the bird
etching
but he can’t find it now

He thinks that someone       must have come in
and bought it
while he was looking away
but    although he is disappointed
he can tell
that Aiks            would have liked it less
and rather

Aiks is taken
by another etching—
the one
                 of a flower
