As is a Projection

Djuturna has gone to oversee
the tractor and Pahn
stands nearby
     in a space that is
a room
       a car
              a clearing at the edge
    of a murky wood
from whence comes Freega
smudged
          and humid
embracing and kissing him

In the dusk    Pahn
is softened by her touch    but
     lets her slough from him
worrying
that Djuturna will see them
and be jealous…

 …later
he looks up
and sees
unnatural patterns of light
forming in a plane in the sky
as if a projection
                                inexplicable

Zhoonév in Voile

.

…Zhoonév walks naked.................................

to the curtain

winding the fabric............

........about her…she is

in Pahn’s arms ... leaning

her thin body into him ...her forehead and

black hair on his shoulder

her back arched as he caresses

her contours

through the voile

contentment........................................

relaxation

.

peace and love we would say

.

…Pahn hears Aiks in the hall he whispers

apprehensively

to Zhoonév

“I don’t want my wife to see us”

He shivers and detaches.........................

Apologetically

.

Zhoonév fades away…...........................................

…Theya stands surprisingly tall

in the old house ... looking

down into Pahn’s eyes ...smiling

asking

if he has ever seen the “smoke system”

She explains

that it was a way to easily pump

marijuana smoke

into the living room

She turns to the wall ...to pull a lever

and smoke

begins immediately ...to pour

from holes

in the bricks ...above the fireplace

Phaithohn laughs commentary.......................

Eeunks comments casually ...from..................

across the room

where she sits on the floor................

drawing…

.

…Pahn walks again with Zhoonév............................

into the bedroom

He shows her the boots

They are tall shiny

supple

thin

He knows they are meant for snow

but they are not lined

He thinks to himself

.

“It doesn’t really matter that they are not lined—one can

wear thick socks”

.

Zhoonév wanders about the room

and disappears

into a

corner…

.

...Pahn takes Djuturna's hand

.
............................................................They are looking for a place

among the wares and barrels

the cluttered tiers

in ranks ... fading

the dim gray

.............feathering off

.................to walls and rafters

He lays cardboard

on the uneven ...dirt floor ... and she

awkward ...but with

intention slides back onto him

.

He is surprised how easily

and quickly

she slips over him ...His method

as vague as his surroundings

as he begins to thrust ...He sees

her hips and back are

covered now with a

slippery wet

grainy

gray soil…

.

............................................................... … later

they try again

in a different part of the building…

With Only Their Clothes Between Them

…while Pahn and Yaohwa are talking on the street
Pahn notices a car    full of co-workers
parked along the curb nearby

He walks alongside
He knows somehow
that Djuturna     is the driver

The passenger door            is open             but
no one inside sees him
notices him
The car begins to pull from the curb             but Pahn
not wanting them to leave
without acknowledgment       leans
hard against it    for a moment     as it moves

Pahn watches the car stop       thinks
or imagines
he sees Djuturna
turn her head around
or look in the rear-view mirror
 as
the vehicle reverses
returning to the curb…

                                                                         …Across the street
                                                                             on the sidewalk
                                                                     up close to a building
                                                                             he and Djuturna
kiss
he does not remember
how their faces came together
or how the kiss began         but it is
very soft   damp
 and attached

Pahn is afraid
that the others will see them
 He thinks of Aiks
and his vows
and turns his head from Djuturna’s lips

Still
he doesn’t want her to
think he doesn’t want her
and wants
and wants to be sure
that she knows he loves her
so continues to grasp her
thinking to himself      how
comfortable
to hold her
their bodies a perfect fit
with only their clothes
between them

Qalisca

He brings Kalista
young and friendly
to the pale and faded room
                        empty      with small children’s
                                                 toys spilled and abandoned
            old curtains
                                    for close conversation and hugs
                             Sometimes      when they have come
                                    Pahn has sensed Penelopeya
ghosting in the back rooms       Sometimes
he is aware      that Aiks is there       somewhere
This time            Aiks calls to him…
…He goes and speaks to her     briefly     casually
unconcerned…       …and returns

Now
the room appears vacant but for a sheet
as if thrown over a chair
He lifts the edge     and pulls it over his head      and
 finds Kalista        her shoulders bare
                                                                        crying

Pahn holds her and asks  “Why are you crying”

She sobs “You didn’t tell me you were married”

Pahn aches with guilt and sympathy
that he fears he will never slough
Pahn imagines saying to her
                                    that his wife
has always been in the house when they have come
but he can’t remember if the two   have
ever actually seen each other there…

…He is called away again      returns again
but now she is truly gone…

…He looks in the next room      also empty
wall to wall
                        carpet
 floor to floor
                                    curtains
His feet feel    water through his socks
He looks up to see holes in the ceiling by the wall
with icicles melting into the room
He imagines the rot
He imagines the repairs
that need to be done
 to keep out the cold
Returning to the other room for clues
he finds papers she has dropped
with scribbled numbers
and illegible phrases
and her name
which he sees
she has spelled with a Q—it looks like “Qalisca”
but it is too hard to read.
He wishes that he could read it all
and know all about her
He looks where she was sitting
on the window seat
                                                            and finds her keys…

            …Outside he searches for her
in the light       and June snow
He is not bothered by the snow out of season…

…Inside the first doorway     he finds
a sort of shelter for women
                                                —almost a hospital
He searches the corridor     comes back
and turns in to a large room
with plastic curtains along a side
and a reception area
There is a woman walking by     and
he asks her

 “Where is Kalista?

She motions to the curtains.
He is shy of peeking in
so calls sweetly    and playfully

 “Kalista

Kalista

I have your keys”

She comes out quickly     without expression
and takes the keys saying      “Thank you”
 returning to her curtained refuge

The woman that he saw before comes back and scolds him
half angry       half friendly
for being a man

He wants to talk to Kalista
to smooth things over
to reassure her
to regain the love that they felt for each other
that he had thought was innocent

He goes back to the house to find more clues
but finds only unfamiliar fragments
of a someone’s childhood

Later
When I remember this story
 I think for a moment
that Pahn was born with a permanently broken heart
but that thought is too sad and pessimistic
 so I scuttle it
